"Mundo Sa Labas ng Tribo" is an artwork I done for NCBD last year (2020). I have envisioned our indigenous children reading books as how in reality they are the ones who find it very difficult to have good education cause of many hindrances involves like civil war going on, calamity stricken areas, victims of land grabbing, extra judfical killings and financial problems. The children I have put here are representatives from (Lower left to right) Blaan, a child wearing a katipunero costume, Manobo, Mindanaoan, Aeta, Yakan and an Ifugao child.
"Dr. Rizal's Wish" is an idea came to mind as an artwork I made for the celebration of our National Hero. I imagined Gat Jose to be writing up things for our indigenous children and pushing for equality for them to live free in their ancestral land, aware of their rights, and teaching children the world beyond of the things they know now.
"Free for All" came from the theme why do we illustrate books for children, and it meant two ways as how the title is. Firstly, in a more optimistic way, I wish that the artwork will give awareness for the equal rights of the children... to tend their farm, live quietly in their ancestral land, assisted with education and support from the government. I hoped that children from the cities see, that love for the environment links with the indigenous people and both wildlife and the people go hand and hand. Second is the free-for-all attacks happening with the ethnic groups' ancestral lands. The ones seen in my artwork are the representatives from (Left to right going up), Ati child from Bohol, a Teduray lady, a lumad girl, a Dumagat boy, and a Tumandok girl.
